CasAyuda  School for the deaf and downs

Picture
In 1998, Nelly Belaya founded CasAyuda (Helping Home) a school for the physically and mentally disabled children in Comayagua, Honduras.  Nelly (pictured left in the white shirt) is herself a paraplegic, had a dream to provide educational opportunities to those who otherwise would not go to school.  By 2003 CasAyuda needed more space.

In January 2003, H.I.S. joined hands with CasAyuda, and in 2004 completed eight class rooms. In 2005 H.I.S. built dormitories for the students who came from the mountains thus enabling them to attend CasAyuda during the week and return to their families on the weekend.

In 2007-2008, H.I.S. assisted CasAyuda in building additional classrooms for the junior high students.  These classrooms are used for vocational education such as art (painting) silk screening, cosmetology and baking.

CasAyuda school consists of preschool to sixth grade for the deaf, six levels in special education and independent life program for adults. The deaf children who graduate  from sixth grade  are able to go to public school in a special program run on weekends (tuition is required).

CasAyuda offers free audiometric testing for those in need.  They also perform these tests for companies around the city for a small fee.  CasAyuda and a hospital from Virginia have joined hands and are working together to perform hearing testing, minor surgeries and collect donations of hearing aids.  This is done once a year usually in November.

Foundation Jireh In El Rosario Nutrition Center

Picture
Foundation Jireh is a non-profit organization in Honduras created for the purpose of helping children and youth in an economically depressed area.  Foundation Jireh provides one meal a day, school supplies and other services to the children and youth from the small village of El Rosario. The families assisted by the foundation live on an income of less than $2.00 a day.  Their homes are made of adobe with dirt floors and have no toilets or electricity.

In 2006, H.I.S. purchased a piece of property with a small house that was remodeled into a nutrition center in 2007.  It now has a kitchen with a dining room, and a covered outdoor multipurpose area.

Currently Jireh is feeding 45 children per school day

In 2010 Foundation Jireh was able to build a church with the help of a private loan.  They use the building for church services and for a feeding program for their church members and local children. They have also began a weekend school program for local youth and young adults, who for various reasons, are behind in school.  This program gives them the opportunity to complete two grades in one school year. This is a public school project under the control of the Honduras government.  It operates on weekends so those individuals who work have the opportunity to attend.

Santo Domingo Day Care

In Honduras children are often left alone while parents are at work.  This can leave children exposed to appalling levels of cruelty and neglect at very young ages.  At times, they may be beaten, locked in houses, attacked by animals, sexually abused, and are often subjected to degrading treatment in their own communities.  Many are deprived of adequate food and basic medical care.

A group of women from the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco, in the city of Comayagua, felt the need to help some of these children.  Their dream was to start a Nutrition/ Day Care Center for low income families that would provide protection, food, education, spiritual guidance and medical care. The Santo Domingo Savio Day Care is located in the village of Independencia just outside Comayagua, Honduras.

In the summer of 2008, the dream began to take shape as H.I.S. work teams began the first phase of the Day Care. This included the construction of a kitchen, an office, a bathroom and a large multipurpose room, which also served as two classrooms.  In January of 2009, the second phase of the Day Care was completed with the construction of two additional classrooms.  In January of 2010, a security wall was constructed around the facility.

The Santo Domingo Savio Day Care is located in the village of Independencia just outside Comayagua, Honduras.  The day care center provides education, food, love and spiritual direction to the children served by this mission.

In 2012, the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco found some financial assistance for the feeding program from local businesses.  H.I.S. also supports the feeding program on a monthly basis through donations from individuals and fundraising events.  Currently there are 62 children ages 3 to 5 attending.

The long range vision is to provide programs designed to cover the needs of these children.  It would also include micro businesses to teach skills and other technical training for the mothers, which would enable them to become more self-sufficient.

In January 2011, Hands In Service joined the members of Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal Church and began in the construction of an 8 room school/nutrition center and church sanctuary. One of the classrooms was used for their worship services on Sundays.

The construction of this facility was done in phases.  The first phase was the construction of the 8 classrooms and bathrooms.  The second phase was the church sanctuary and office on the second floor. Members of the church joined our work teams daily.  Church members and people from the community were very excited and involved in the construction of the building.  Members of the church volunteered their time and building materials along with doing fundraising projects.  Local businesses donated cement blocks and cement.
In 2016 this outreach had 4 active classes.  Every year they will add another grade until the school has grades from preschool through high school.
In 2016 Hands In Service completed their commitment to Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal Church.
