A Week Long Work Project With H.I.S.

We house our teams at a local hotel in Comayagua.  Our day begins with an American buffet breakfast at 7:00 am and morning devotions at the hotel.  We arrive at the work site around 8:15 am.  Work-site projects range from mixing mortar, sifting and hauling gravel, laying block, bending rebar, painting beams, cleaning and painting classrooms/dorms, assembling furniture and doing building maintenance and repair.  A local contractor oversees our construction work at the site.  Our team works in partnership with the contractor’s crew in the construction of the buildings.

Lunch is from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm and is brought to the work site.  Our work-day ends around 4:00 pm when we return to the hotel for rest, relaxation and free time.  We gather together at 6:00 pm for dinner at a local restaurant where we have typical Honduran food.  After dinner is free time which could include visiting the local grocery store, the ice cream shop, an evening stroll to central park or just relaxing on the hotel porch.  Some teams also use the evening free time for sharing their day and debriefing.

In addition to the project, work teams have many opportunities to interact with the people of Honduras and enjoy their culture.  The teams attend local church services, tour local businesses, go shopping at the outdoor marketplace and just stroll around town.  We also take the teams to villages in the mountains where they are involved in handing out clothing, beans, rice, sugar, flour and toys.

As we partner with Honduran organizations, we often learn of areas of need that can be fulfilled by professionals we have access to but the Hondurans may not.  In these cases, we have invited special teams in to meet these needs such as physical or occupational therapy, hearing testing or dental work.

Work teams vary in size from a small team of 8 to a maximum of 14.  Work projects can be arranged and put together for youth, ages 13 through high school, and adult and family teams.  Teams are assembled and organized through individuals and churches.

H.I.S. has an individual base cost of $975.00, which includes: ground transportation, lodging, food and an over.ride for work materials and supplies.
