The M23 rebels captured the city of Goma, DR Congo. The eastern area of DR Congo has been an area of horrible conflict for many years causing rape, murders and hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes. The reasons for this are rooted in the tribal conflicts and the Rwandan genocide in 1994. It is a very complicated situation that is difficult to understand. But we have been supporting a ministry team in Goma for about 13 years. Our support helps provide love in the form of food, medical supplies, clothing, bedding and the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the main men, women and juvenile prisons in Goma.
When the rebels invaded Goma, the prisoners began to escape but were shot by the guards until the guards fled from the rebel invasion. The men prisoners then entered the woman’s prison and began to rape and kill some of the women. Someone locked the women in the prison and set fire to it. The news reports about 136 women along with many children were killed or burned to death in the prison. All the men and juveniles that were not shot escaped into the city where there were reports of pillaging and looting.
