Leprosy Ministry
Leprosy is an age-old disease that causes nerve damage and loss of sensation in parts of the body – such as the hands, feet and face – often resulting in disability and disfigurement of distressing proportions.
Because of its contagious nature and the progressively ruinous effects on the patient’s appearance, these unfortunate souls have historically been relegated to isolation and lonely confinement apart from society. Since the mid 1970’s, however, a multi-drug- therapy has brought promising progress for its treatment and relief for its victims. His Missions is happy to be a contributing partner in these healing endeavors.
A closer look at leprosy
Having your fellow human beings shout “Unclean!” at your approach was a typical greeting for individuals cursed with leprosy in Biblical times, but rejection, fear and cruel abuse continue to this day for many afflicted with this sad disease throughout the world. Despite the advent of a multi-drug therapy in the 1970’s which has brought wonderful progress in the treatment of this bacteria–borne disease, many remain unreached for medical assistance, or have received it after the disease has ravaged their bodies, causing extensive disability and disfigurement.
Persistent superstition also contributes to the enduring belief that the victim is “demon-possessed,” further marginalizing these unfortunate souls to remote colonies as their communities ostracize them. This “banishment” all too often causes them to miss out on medicines and treatment that can improve their lives immeasurably. Jesus was all too familiar with the pain of their existence as evidenced by the compassion evoked in encountering the ten lepers in Luke 17 where he sent forth his healing power to heal them, and in Matthew 26 when He dined in the home of Simon the Leper shortly before his death. Being a part of this merciful mission – The Mission of Jesus – to heal and better the lives of the leprosy-affected – is our mission as well.
What His Missions International (HMI) is doing to help.
Our “His Missions” ministry is providing care for leprosy patients in many colonies in the Hyderabad, India, area, as well as Kathmandu, Nepal, and Goma, D.R. Congo. This care is in some of the most destitute areas imaginable, supplying medical attention, food distribution, vocational training, and school sponsorships for the children of leprosy-affected families.
Our dedicated partners are true servants of the Lord who strive daily to restore health and hope to those affected by leprosy and their loved ones. This is the God-given vision we share to serve the very least of the “least of these,” and — because of the contributions of our compassionate partners:
- HMI is able to give generous support and assistance for the leprosy patients.
- HMI can help provide special shoes for those who have badly injured feet due to nerve damage.
- HMI also partners with medical providers to procure prostheses to help those who have lost legs or feet due to the crippling effects of the disease.
HMI partners with wound care nurses and doctors to provide medical care to many leprosy colonies in India, China, DR Congo, and Nepal. HMI also provides food and provision for these colonies whenever possible.
Please consider helping us be the hands, feet and voice of Jesus to these Leprosy Patients
Children Of leprosy patients
Many of the children that live in the leprosy colonies do not have leprosy, but they suffer being stigmatized and ostracized because their parents or grandparents were leprosy patients. They have a difficult time receiving an education due to their social status and extreme poverty.
Because of the compassion of our wonderful donors, HMI has been able to provide tuition for many of these children at a special Christian school in India. Getting an education is the best way for these children to escape the poverty that holds them captive.
Please consider helping us send these children to school. You will be adding to your Heavenly account and joining with the heart of Jesus in His compassion for these little ones.
